Who We Are

Founded in 2021, Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is a nonprofit, four-year MD program that will enhance traditional medical education with the arts, humanities, and whole health principles. The school's culture embraces self-care to empower students to care for their own well-being as well as their patients'. The school's state-of-the-art medical education facility is in Bentonville, Arkansas on the Crystal Bridges campus, home to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Heartland Whole Health Institute. The school has been granted preliminary accreditation status by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

About The Position

The Biostatistician supports medical students in developing core skills in research design and analysis, with an emphasis on statistical thinking and interpretation. Responsibilities include providing mentorship and consultation on research projects, supporting curriculum delivery through journal clubs and workshops, and collaborating with researchers to ensure scientific rigor in study design, data analysis, and interpretation. This position centralizes statistical expertise across departments, enhancing research quality and providing consistent infrastructure support throughout the institution. The biostatistician position is not dependent on external grant funding.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide statistical consultation and expertise in study design, methodology, and analysis for clinical, biomedical, educational, and public health research.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee data management, quality assurance, and reproducible research practices to ensure rigor, transparency, and compliance with institutional and federal requirements.
  • Mentor and advise medical students and faculty (both one-on-one and in groups) on statistical methods, research design, data analysis, and preparation of manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations.
  • Facilitate teaching of biostatistics through flipped-classroom sessions, workshops, case-based learning, and journal clubs as part of the longitudinal research curriculum that promote statistical reasoning and application.
  • Collaborate with faculty and clinicians to strengthen methodological rigor in ongoing and new research studies, contributing to institutional scholarship and dissemination.
  • Contribute to the design, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the longitudinal research curriculum, including teaching materials, assessment tools, and faculty training resources.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and maintain statistical software, data visualization platforms, and programming resources to support institutional research capacity.
  • Support AWSOM's research culture by participating in events such as the Annual Research Day, student milestone reviews, and community dissemination activities.
  • Establish and maintain infrastructure for centralized statistical support, including consultation scheduling systems, shared code repositories, and best-practice documentation.
  • Stay current with emerging statistical methods, technologies, and regulatory standards, and integrate them into institutional research practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Doctoral degree (PhD or DrPH) in biostatistics, epidemiology, or public health, required.
  • At least one year of postdoctoral experience in data management and manipulation techniques, required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate statistical concepts effectively in active, student-centered environments, required.
  • Strong collaborative skills and interest in mentoring students, staff and junior faculty, required.
  • Evidence of scholarship, including at least one first-author, full-length research publication, required.
  • Experience teaching biostatistics to medical/graduate students, preferred.
  • Experience with team-based, case-based, or other active learning pedagogies, preferred.
  • Comfort with developing interactive teaching materials and assessment items, preferred.
  • Experience in clinical, educational, or public health research design and dissemination, preferred.
  • Experience with analysis of large data and secondary databases, preferred.
  • Proficiency in R, Python, SAS, SPSS or Stata, preferred.

Physical Demands : In the work environment described, position requires sitting at a desk and utilizing a computer and a telephone for prolonged periods of time and good eye/hand coordination, bending, and stretching, and physical stamina to lift and transport a minimum of 10 pounds. Work Environment : Work is performed full-time (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) in a professional, climate-controlled office environment with standard office equipment, including computers, printers, and telephones. This role requires working in an open setting near colleagues. The noise level is typically low to moderate. The role also requires interaction with both the public and internal team members in a professional and courteous manner. Some local travel will be required, and a flexible schedule may be necessary to accommodate business needs, including occasional evening and weekend work hours.
