The Position

Reporting to the Health Services Manager, the Health Care Assistant will assist with daily living and personal care services in patients' homes, in accordance with a care plan developed by the Home Care Nursing team. The successful applicant will work with clients and families to address health, psychosocial, environmental and functional needs following the “home is best” model, promoting independence and improving patients’ quality of life in their homes. Further, the successful candidate should be able and willing to provide service in a safe, compassionate and culturally appropriate way.

Note : This is a temporary position.

The Candidate:

• Assisting in delivering client care under a Registered Nurse's or other designated functional direction and in cooperation with interdisciplinary team members.
• Providing personal care to clients while following established care plans. This may include bathing, grooming, dressing, assisting with meals and oral hygiene and performing nursing care duties as applicable.
• Using techniques that enable the client/resident to utilize their maximum ability while making personal choices.
• Observing and monitoring clients’ progress, symptoms and behavioural changes and reporting/recording significant observations.
• Administering medications to clients as prescribed by a physician.
• Utilizing mechanical aides such as lifts, specialty beds and wheelchairs and assisting with lifting and/or transferring clients following established lifting/safety techniques.
• Must be able to handle sensitive information in a completely confidential manner.
• Maintain flexibility in schedule and respond to unexpected emergencies and changes in workload to fulfill responsibilities.
• Perform other duties within the scope of the position, as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

• Grade 10 (including English 10).
• Successful graduation from a recognized Health Care Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Eligible for BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry registration.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and proficiently both verbally and in writing.
• Respect for, sensitivity towards, knowledge, and understanding of shishalh culture and traditions.
• Current BC Driver’s License and access to a personal vehicle.
• Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
• Up-to-date vaccinations.
