Job Description

About the Role

Medworks is hiring a Surgical First Assistant to join our surgical support team serving hospitals and surgery centers across Central and Eastern Virginia – including Charlottesville, Richmond, and the Tidewater area. In this mobile, hands-on role, you'll travel between client sites and work alongside fellow Medworks teammates and surgical staff to assist surgeons during procedures and ensure that every case runs safely, smoothly, and efficiently.

You'll play an essential role in the operating room—helping with patient positioning and draping, maintaining the sterile field, and providing direct assistance to the surgeon throughout each procedure. Whether you're suturing, cauterizing, retracting, or supporting the surgical team in maintaining a laser-safe and aseptic environment, you'll be making a meaningful impact on patient outcomes and surgical success.

What You'll Do

  • Prepare the operating room by setting up sterile instruments, surgical equipment, and supplies.
  • Assist with patient positioning, draping, and maintaining a sterile field.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and provide direct intraoperative assistance, including suturing, cauterizing, and retracting.
  • Operate and support Medworks' specialty surgical and laser equipment during procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to aseptic and infection control standards.
  • Communicate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and surgical staff to promote teamwork and efficiency.
  • Assist with post-procedure clean-up, restocking, and maintaining equipment readiness.
  • Accurately document case details and equipment usage in accordance with Medworks standards.

What We're Looking For

Certification Required: Active Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA), Certified First Assistant (CFA), Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA), or Surgical Assistant-Certified (SA-C) credential through an accredited body. Applications without certification will not be considered.

Location: Must reside within ~40 miles of Richmond, VA.

Skills & Attributes:

  • In-depth knowledge of surgical instrumentation, anatomy, and aseptic technique.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills in high-pressure environments.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration abilities.
  • High stamina and attention to detail during long or complex procedures.
  • Experience with urology, gynecology, or general surgery preferred.

Schedule & Travel

  • Monday–Friday schedule (occasional early starts or extended days depending on surgical schedule).
  • Occasional on-call rotation as needed.
