About the Role
Medworks is hiring a Surgical First Assistant to support surgeons and clinical teams in hospitals and surgery centers across Central and Eastern Virginia. This is a mobile, hands-on role supporting scheduled surgical cases alongside Medworks teammates and facility staff.
You'll assist surgeons during procedures, help maintain a sterile environment, and support efficient case flow in the operating room.
Key Responsibilities
Assist surgeons during procedures under appropriate supervision
Support patient positioning, draping, and sterile field maintenance
Prepare operating rooms with required instruments, equipment, and supplies
Anticipate procedural needs and respond to surgeon requests during cases
Operate and support Medworks surgical equipment as trained
Follow infection control, laser safety, and facility protocols
Communicate clearly with surgeons, nurses, and OR staff
Assist with post-case cleanup, equipment breakdown, and restocking
Document case details and equipment usage per Medworks guidelines
Required Qualifications
Active certification as one of the following:
Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA)
Certified First Assistant (CFA)
Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA)
Surgical Assistant-Certified (SA-C)
Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and sterile technique
Ability to work in fast-paced clinical environments
Reliable transportation and ability to travel between facilities
Preferred Experience
Experience in urology, gynecology, or general surgery
Prior hospital or ambulatory surgery center experience
Schedule & Travel
Primarily Monday–Friday
Schedule based on surgical case times (early starts or extended days may occur)
Occasional on-call rotation as needed
